What are Nutella chocolate chip cookies?

Nutella chocolate chip cookies are a fun little spin on the traditional chocolate chip cookie. While I believe that chocolate chip cookies are one of the greatest desserts of all time on their own, it’s always fun to add a little flare to them every now and then. These bad boys are really just as simple as adding some Nutella to our classic recipe. Plus, we’re using all brown sugar this time for an extra chewy and decadent cookie.

Ingredients

  • dark brown sugar
  • butter
  • eggs
  • vanilla extract
  • all-purpose flour
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • chocolate chips
  • Nutella

How to make Nutella chocolate chip cookies

Make your cookie dough

Making Nutella chocolate chip cookies is just as easy as making any other drop cookie. Start by melting your butter and adding it to your mixing bowl. You can choose to use a stand mixer here or just mix by hand. Next, add the brown sugar and begin to mix the two together. If you’re using a stand mixer, use the paddle attachment. Mix until the butter and sugar are well combined, the mixture should look very smooth. Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix again until fully combined. If using a stand mixer, be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl between mixes to ensure you get a fully even dough. In a separate mixing bowl, add the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix these until combined and then gradually add it to the wet mixture.

Add the good stuff

Now it’s time to add your liquid gold. Add the Nutella to your dough and gently mix it in until evenly distributed. If your Nutella is a little too solid you can microwave it to loosen it up or even add some coconut oil if need be. Next, add the chocolate chips and mix again until those are evenly distributed and just combined. If you were using a stand mixer, I recommend mixing these two by hand so that you don’t accidentally overmix your cookie dough.

Scoop the dough

Then, use a medium sized cookie scoop to scoop out all of your Nutella chocolate chip cookies. Scoop your dough onto a lined cookie sheet and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. You can chill it uncovered for around an hour. If you’ll be keeping it in the fridge for longer, I recommend either covering it or keeping the dough in a container. Your dough can stay there for up to 24 hours.

Bake to perfection

When you’re ready to bake, set your oven to 350℉. Place the dough balls on a separate lined baking sheet about 2” apart. This allows enough room for the cookies to spread. Then, when the oven has reached temperature, bake your Nutella chocolate chip cookies for 8-10 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when the edges are fully cooked and the centre is slightly soft. You should be able to see some golden brown around the edges as well. Let your little babies cool for around 5-10 minutes before diving in. This allows them to fully finish their baking process and makes it so that they won’t fall apart when you pick them up. Or burn yourself, please don’t do that!

How to store

Nutella chocolate chip cookies can be stored a few different ways. If you know you’ll have them within the next few days, you can keep them at room temperature in an airtight bag or container for up to 5-7 days. If you’d like to keep them longer, you can freeze them fully baked. Just store them in a freezer safe bag or container after they’ve cooled and you can keep them frozen for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to have one again, take them out of the freezer and allow them to thaw to room temperature. You can microwave them if you’d like as well for an extra fresh feeling!

Another option is to freeze the dough before you bake it. After scooping the dough out all you have to do is add the dough balls to a freezer safe bag or container. Store them in the freezer and then whenever you’re ready to have some Nutella chocolate chip cookies, let as many as you’d like thaw to room temperature. Then you can just bake them exactly how you would if they were fresh. Now you have fresh out the oven cookies on demand, how amazing is that?! You can keep the dough frozen well for up to 3-6 months.
