What is edible sugar cookie dough?

Edible sugar cookie dough is the safe version of regular sugar cookie dough. We all grew up eating raw cookie dough from the package or bowl and we’ve always heard that it could make us sick. This is absolutely true, it can make us sick and we shouldn’t take the chance. That’s why we make totally safe edible versions. It’s basically the best part about making cookies, except you can actually just eat all of it and not have to worry. This recipe is for edible sugar cookie dough because sugar cookies are always extra special around this time of year.

What makes edible cookie dough safe to eat?

Flour and eggs are the two main ingredients that can cause us to get sick if we eat them raw. By heat-treating the flour, you eliminate any bacteria that would be bad for us to ingest. In this recipe we’re replacing the eggs with milk, this still works as a binder like when using eggs. And because we’re not baking the dough we don’t have to match the egg texture exactly.

Ingredients

  • white sugar: the sole sweetness provider for this recipe, most cookies use both white and brown sugar but sugar cookies only consist of white
  • butter: the fat component of the recipe that gives the dough that delicious buttery flavour that we love!
  • milk: our egg replacement, this adds a little bit of a liquid and will help bind the dough while being safe to eat unbaked
  • vanilla extract: the main flavour in most sugar cookie doughs
  • all-purpose flour: heat-treated flour will give us a dough that sticks together but is also completely safe to eat
  • salt: a little bit of salt helps to bring out the sweet flavours and make everything extra delicious
  • sprinkles: just for fun, but always welcome if you ask me!

How to make edible sugar cookie dough

Start by preheating your oven to 350℉. Spread the flour over a lined baking sheet and when the oven is ready, bake for 5 minutes. The flour should reach a minimum temperature of 160℉ . Let it cool completely before using. Add the sugar and butter to a bowl and mix together until light and fluffy, you can also use a stand mixer but it’s not necessary. Add the milk and vanilla extract, mix until combined. Gradually add the flour and salt, mix until well incorporated. Add sprinkles if desired and mix again. You can use fun festive sprinkles here to make your recipe extra holiday themed.

You can scoop out little dough balls if you’d like or just eat it straight out of the bowl. This recipe makes 2-4 servings depending on how much you consider a serving…we don’t judge here. You can also double the recipe if you’d like to make more at once.

How to store

Your edible sugar cookie dough will be best stored in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week. If you’d like to keep some for another time, I highly recommend scooping them into dough balls and putting them in a freezer safe container or bag. You can then freeze the dough for up to 6 months and pull it out any time you’re craving it!
