What is edible birthday cake cookie dough?

Edible birthday cake cookie dough is an edible dough made using cake mix. It tastes just like cake in another form! If you’re someone who loves to sneak a little taste of dough while making cookies, edible cookie dough is for you! It’s totally safe to eat, and this birthday cake version takes edible dough to the next level. This could even be your next celebration dessert instead of actual cake???

How to make edible cookie dough safe to eat

There are two things in raw cookie dough that risk making us sick: eggs and flour. Both of these ingredients can potentially contain bacteria that isn’t good for us to ingest because it can make us sick when uncooked. The way around this for edible cookie dough is to use something in place of eggs (in this case milk) and to heat treat the flour. Heat treating the flour eliminates this bacteria and allows us to enjoy our cookie dough in peace.

How to heat treat flour

Heat treating flour is super easy! All you have to do is measure your flour or cake mix and spread it out across a lined baking sheet. Set your oven to 350℉ and when it’s ready, put the pan in the oven for 5-10 minutes. If you’re using a smaller amount of flour like we are in this recipe, 5 minutes should be perfect. You want to be sure that the flour has enough time to kill any bacteria but it should not be in there so long that it starts browning. When it’s done, check its temperature with a food thermometer to make sure it has hit at least 160℉. Once it has, let it cool completely before using in your edible birthday cake cookie dough.

For this recipe we’re heat treating the cake mix because that is our flour.

Ingredients

  • white sugar
  • unsalted butter
  • milk
  • vanilla
  • confetti cake mix
  • salt
  • sprinkles

How to make edible birthday cake cookie dough

The first step of making edible birthday cake cookie dough is to measure and heat treat your cake mix. Follow the heat treating steps and allow your cake mix to completely cool down. Next, add your softened butter and sugar to a medium sized mixing bowl and mix together. Mix until they are fully combined. Then, add your milk and vanilla and mix again. Now it’s time to add your heat treated cake mix as well as your salt. Mix again until everything is combined. Lastly, add extra sprinkles if you’d like and mix one more time. Edible doughs can really come together so fast, they’re so much fun to make!

At this stage you can either transfer all your dough to a container to keep in the fridge, or eat right away. Or, you can scoop your dough into balls for easy sharing. This recipe makes enough for around 4 servings depending on how much you’d like to eat as a serving. I find that keeping the dough in a container is great for just one person and dough balls are great for multiple people. Or to keep for longer periods of time.

How to store

No matter how you’d like to shape your edible birthday cake cookie dough, you can keep it in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. If you’d like to keep it longer you can keep it in a freezer safe bag or container in the freezer for up to 3 months. It’s much easier to store the dough as balls if you’re freezing it because you can take them out one at a time whenever you want them. Whereas, if you keep it all together in one container, you’ll have to defrost the whole thing and keep it in the fridge for that 1-2 weeks.

My recommendation is, if you’ll finish it in 1-2 weeks, one container is perfectly fine. If you’d like to keep it for longer, freeze the dough in balls.
