What are Creme Egg brownies?

Creme egg brownies are an easy and fun dessert perfect for Easter time. We’re using boxed brownies to make them insanely quick, easy, and accessible. On top of that, there’s a topping made up of oats, butter, sugar, and creme eggs of course. They’re a simple treat that’s totally delicious.

Ingredients

  • boxed brownie mix
  • eggs
  • oil
  • water
  • oats
  • brown sugar
  • butter
  • creme eggs

How to make Creme Egg brownies

One of the best parts about this recipe is how easy it is, so let’s get into it! To start of course we have to make our brownies. Grab your favourite boxed brownie mix or scratch brownie recipe and prepare it as directed. Preheat the oven to the instructed heat while you prepare your pan. Generously grease with butter and line with parchment paper as well. Then, add your brownie batter and level it out as evenly as you can if necessary. When the oven comes to temperature, pop your brownies in and bake them for as long as directed.

While the brownies are baking, make your topping. Start by grinding ½ cup of oats into flour (if you already have oat flour on hand you can just use that) using a blender or food processor. Next, add that oat flour to a bowl with ½ cup of whole rolled oats, 1 tbsp of brown sugar, and ⅛ cup of melted butter. Mix everything together well until it is all fully combined. Then, roughly chop up your creme eggs and add to the mixture. You can use as many creme eggs as you like here but in this case I feel like the more the merrier is the way to go. Add the chopped creme eggs to the rest of the topping and mix until evenly combined.

Once the brownies are done baking and removed from the oven, add the oat topping on top right away. Distribute it evenly on top of the brownies covering as much of the surface as possible. After that, add a sheet of aluminum foil to the top of the pan and cover the brownies while they cool down on their own. This allows the oats to “cook” a tiny bit and better attach themselves to the brownies. When you’re ready to eat, just cut your brownies into as many squares as you’d like and enjoy!

Why don’t we cook the topping?

In the past I’ve tried recipes where I’ve added the creme egg into the dessert before cooking and they end up being kind of hard and gummy which I’m not a big fan of. If you prefer the taste of the oats cooked, you can mix everything together except the creme eggs and spread it out on a baking tray. Cook that for 5-10 minutes at 300℉ and let cool before adding the chopped creme eggs.

How to store

You can store your creme egg brownies at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5-7 days. If you’d like to keep them longer than that all you have to do is put them in a freezer safe bag or container and keep them in the freezer. They’ll keep well there for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to have them again just take them out and allow them to thaw back to room temperature.
