What is Christmas Crack Chex Mix?

Christmas Crack Chex Mix is a combination of a sweet cereal snack mix and “Christmas crack” aka cracker candy. Traditional Chex mix is usually on the salty/savoury side but this version is full of sweet cereals, white chocolate, and some salty elements.

What is Christmas crack?

Christmas crack is another name for cracker candy. This beloved dessert is a simple layered treat with saltine crackers, a quick caramel, and chocolate. This one is always a hit!

What ingredients do you need for Christmas Crack Chex Mix?

For the Christmas crack:

  • saltine crackers
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • sprinkles (optional)

For the Chex mix:

  • Chex cereal (I used the cinnamon flavour but any will work)
  • Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch cereal
  • Golden Grahams cereal
  • pretzel sticks
  • Christmas M&M’s
  • white candy melts
  • Christmas sprinkles (optional)

Can I make substitutions?

Heck yeah! You can make this snack mix with any substitutions you’d like! I personally love the way all of these elements work together but make any changes where you see fit. For this version I chose to use the cinnamon Chex flavour but there are so many others that would work so well, maybe chocolate?! I also think the Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch is such a fun seasonal flavour but there are tonssss of seasonal cereals that would be amazing in a snack mix like this. Switch it up to your liking, more sweet than salty, more salty than sweet, all sweet, all cereal, whatever floats your boat! But if I had to make one recommendation, it would be to keep the cracker candy in there, that stuff is so good.

How to make Christmas Crack Chex Mix

Basically you throw everything in a bowl, coat it in some chocolate and call it a day. It really is one of the easiest snack recipes and such a great option for holiday parties or get-togethers. The most work you’ll need to do is to make the christmas crack but I promise you it’s super easy.

We’re using Tasty’s recipe, you can find it here if you’d like to see it in a little more detail but I’ll give you the rundown. Line your pan with crackers, add your butter to a saucepan and melt it on low. Add your sugar, cook on medium until it becomes a caramel and add it to the top of the crackers. Spread it evenly, then put the pan in the oven for 5 minutes. Next add the chocolate chips, melt them by either adding aluminum foil to the top or popping the pan back in the oven for a minute or two. Spread that evenly, add your sprinkles if you’d like and let it sit until the chocolate sets up. You can put it in the fridge to speed up the process. When it’s all set, break it into little pieces and add to your bowl to create your own Christmas Crack Chex Mix.

I’ve found that I prefer to mix the cereals and pretzels together, coat in the melted chocolate, then spread over a pan. After that I add the M&M’s and sprinkles on top so that they stick to the rest of the mix. Then, once that is all set, I add it to a large bowl and mix with the cracker candy.

The fist step in making the snack mix, the cereals, prezels, chocolates and spinkles laid out on a pan.

How to store Christmas Crack Chex Mix

This mix can be stored in an airtight container or bag for around a week. If you’d like to keep it longer you can put it in a freezer safe bag or container and keep it there for up to 3 months.

  • 1-2 sleeves of saltine crackers enough to fill a baking sheet
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 ⅛ cup brown sugar
  • 1 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups Chex cereal
  • 2 cups Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch cereal
  • 2 cups Golden Grahams cereal
  • 2 cups pretzel sticks broken into smaller pieces
  • ½ cup Christmas M&M’s
  • 1 cup white candy melts
  • ¼ cup Christmas sprinkles

  • Make christmas crack. Start by preheating the oven to 350℉. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, cover with cooking spray and add as many saltine crackers as will fit.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan on low heat, add brown sugar when melted and raise heat to medium. Stir constantly until boiling, then boil for 3 minutes.
  • Pour mixture over crackers and spread evenly across the pan.
  • Put baking sheet in the oven for 5 minutes. When removed, add the chocolate chips to the top. Either add foil on top or place back into the oven for 1-2 minutes to melt. Spread chocolate evenly. Add sprinkles or any toppings if desired.
  • Let cool and break into small pieces.
  • Add Chex, Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch, Golden Grahams, and pretzels to a large bowl.
  • Melt the candy melts in 20-30 second increments until fully melted. Pour over the cereal and pretzel mixture and toss with a silicone spatula to coat. Mix until evenly coated.
  • Pour over a baking sheet and spread out. Add sprinkles and M&M’s while the mixture is still wet.
  • Let it sit to dry for 15-30 minutes, or put in the refrigerator.
  • Add 2 cups of the Christmas crack to a large bowl. Then add the cereal mixture. Toss to evenly distribute.
  • Serve and enjoy!
