What are chocolate orange brownies?

Chocolate orange brownies are delicious, fudgy brownies with an added orange flavour and pieces of chocolate orange throughout. Chocolate oranges are one of the fun pleasures that come with the holiday season so I wanted to give them a shining moment with these yummy brownies. They also have the addition of orange zest and orange juice to really bump up that flavour.

Ingredients

  • brownie mix (you can also use your fave brownie recipe here)
  • a Terry’s Chocolate Orange or any orange flavoured chocolate
  • a fresh orange – you will need both the juice and the zest

Do I need to use a Terry’s chocolate orange?

Nope, not at all! Any orange flavoured chocolate will do just as well, but I don’t recommend omitting it all together because it adds that extra little bit of umph to the brownie. If you’re using regular orange chocolate, you’ll want to use about one cup in the batter and about one half cup on the top. I personally chose to use the dark chocolate version but either works just fine!

How to make chocolate orange brownies

This recipe is fantastic if you’re looking for something low effort that will really impress your family, loved ones, or anyone else you’ll be seeing during the holiday season. Since we’re using a brownie mix, the prep takes barely any time but they feel extra fancy because of all the orange additions.

To start, zest one orange and set aside. Juice the orange and add to a measuring cup, we’re using the orange juice in place of water in the recipe. Make sure that you have enough orange juice for the amount of water your recipe calls for. If you don’t, you can either get another orange if you have one and juice it until you reach the required amount. Or, you can just add a little bit of water until you reach it. Next, preheat your oven to the temperature listed on the box. Prepare your brownie mix according to the instructions or make your favourite brownie recipe from scratch with the addition of the orange juice.

Next, chop up your orange chocolate. If you’re using an OG chocolate orange, you can take about half to three quarters and use that for inside the batter and use the rest on the top. If you’re just using orange flavoured chocolate, about one cup is good for mixing inside and a half cup for the top. But you can always eyeball this part or add a little extra. Who can say no to more chocolate?  Then, you can take your orange zest and gently mix it into your batter with the chopped chocolate. Grease and line an 8”x8” baking pan and add the brownie batter. Add the rest of your chopped chocolate on top before putting the brownies in the oven. When the oven is preheated, add the pan to the oven and cook for as long as the instructions say. Let cool, and cut into squares.

How to store

These brownies can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week. If you’d like to keep them in the freezer you can wrap them up and put them in an airtight bag or container as well. They can stay in the freezer for up to 6 months.
